Project OCEAN brought waves of health resources for students to surf through in front of the University Bookstore on Tuesday.
The third annual Live Your Life Day event aimed to promote wellness and educate students of all the resources available on and off-campus. More than 20 tables were stationed at the lawn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as students walked by.
Some of the resources at the event included help with food addiction, prevention of disorders and suicide hotline assistance.
“All of these tables are here to promote mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellness,” Project OCEAN’s Program Assistant Coordinator Jane Duong said.
According to Duong, Project OCEAN, which stands for On Campus Emergency Assistance Network, is a California Mental Health Services Authority state-funded grant that aims to raise mental health awareness and encourage students to seek for help, if needed.
During the event, students were able to participate in sports, like ultimate Frisbee, to promote wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
Along with the food, photos, raffle prizes and interactive games, clubs – such as the Salsa Dance Team and the Jui Jitsu Club – performed at the event. Students could also participate yoga and meditation was also provided for students.
Students said they really found the event helpful because so many resources were showcased.
“I think it’s really cool how they have interactive things going on,” sophomore pre-communicative disorders major Jazmine Martinez said. “For example, I got this little wristband with the suicide prevention hotline on it. You never know when you might need it; it’s useful.”
Senior theatre arts major John Leo said he thought the event held more importance than expected.
“Live Your Life Day is essential because it deals with well-being, which I think is helpful since college students are typically stressed out around this time,” Leo said.
