Colorful golf balls and remote control water cars floated in the University Student Union Pool on Wednesday as students gathered around to watch the activities unfold.
This was the first Recposure, an event that promotes the different activities offered at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and their pool deck.
Michael Freeman, aquatics and safety coordinator for Associated Students Inc., helped set up games to play around the pool, including miniature golf and remote-control cars.
“As cheesy as it may sound, we’re trying to expose students to see what we do,” Freeman said. “You can have fun and be active without having to get your hair wet or pump iron.”
Isabella Kubs, a third-year elementary education major, dressed in her lifeguard uniform for the event. Kubs works as a lifeguard at the SRWC. She hopes that the event will bring more attention to the recreation center, which students often miss due to its location.
“We do a lot of fun things on the pool deck,” Kubs said.
The pool deck at the center includes a sand volleyball court, basketball hoops and a balance log that can be used inside the pool.
One student was Larisa Simmons, a third-year healthcare administration major, who found herself at Recposure after seeing posters of the event on campus.
“It sounds fun,” Simmons said, before swinging her golf club.
Justin Mabutas, a third-year computer science major, joined the festivities. After playing multiple rounds, Kubs led Mabutas and Simmons to the prize table that consisted of SRWC keychains, lanyards, socks, a beach towel and an advertisement for Recfest.
Mabutas shared he was happy to know how active the recreation center is.
“I’m more inclined to go,” he said.
Recfest is hosting another event on Sept. 5 which will have food, games and a showing of the film “Detective Pikachu” at the SWRC pool deck.
