The Great Gatsby-May 10
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece “The Great Gatsby” has been turned into a film, again, but this time avant garde director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) is taking the spectacular party scenes and dramatic events in the book and making them intense eye-candy with his grand style. Staring Leonardo DiCaprio, who also starred as Romeo in Luhrmann’s version of Romeo + Juliet released in 1996, headlines as millionaire Jay Gatsby, whose lifestyle and mysterious demeanor draws in war veteran and Yale alumnus, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). The major conflict in the book and film is the love triangle between Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) and her husband Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). This film will not only provide a great story, as proven by its long-term success, but it will also be a beautiful sight.
Iron Man 3-May 3
Disney will certainly do it again with its latest film in the Marvel franchise, Iron Man 3. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Pots and Ben Kingsley as the third installment’s villain, known as The Mandarin. In the past, the Iron Man films have had similar plots, all including one insanely rich and witty man in an expensive weapon-suit, fighting and defeating evil. But judging from the trailers that have been released, this film seems like it is going to be very different from its predecessors. Tony Stark’s suit is now used by the government, but instead of being manually operated like Stark’s suit, the government-made suits are a type of war robot. This may open the door for any number of grim plot points that will definitely make this film darker than the first two.
Star Trek: Into Darkness-May 17
SciFi god J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated second installment of the Star Trek franchise is on its way. With returning stars like Chris Pine as James Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, “Into Darkness” is sure to have the same chemistry that made the first film work so well. But the most exciting and mysterious element is the character of John Harrison, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, War Horse). There have been unconfirmed rumors that Harrison is, in fact, notorious Star Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh, or simply Khan. This is likely because these films are a prequel set in a different timeline, which will explain away any inconsistencies. This film is sure to be a monstrous hit with trekkies and everyday moviegoers alike.
