The No. 14 Long Beach State men’s water polo team (5-11, 0-3 MPSF) was dealt two home defeats over the weekend, falling to No. 6 Pacific 11-5 Saturday and to No. 2 California 14-5 Sunday.
Pacific (13-9, 1-1) scored the first six goals of the match, putting LBSU behind the eight ball.
Jay Gerardi finally got The Beach on the scoreboard in the second quarter, but the Tigers brought an 8-3 lead with them in to the half. Pacific out-scored LBSU 3-2 in the final two quarters to keep LBSU winless in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action.
Travis Buchanan, who turned 18 Saturday, scored a career-high two goals, and Clint Wilson and Kevin Bradley also scored twice in the loss.
Sunday didn’t go any better for The Beach, which was dealt a 14-5 loss to the California Golden Bears in another MPSF game.
Cal scored six first quarter goals en route to a dominating victory over the 49ers. The Beach managed to cut the deficit to 6-3 with goals by Jeff Greenwood, Nick Korsgaden and Jay Gerardi, but California came right back with three consecutive goals in the second quarter to build the lead to 9-3.
Nick Korsgaden and Jeff Greenwood ended the game with two goals apiece.
The 49ers’ next match will be Oct. 28 at Stanford.
