“Your life, I wish, were like a VHS tape, we could put the tape in … and delete these years of difficulty and misery.” That’s what Cardinal Roger Mahoney said following the recent $660-million settlement that will be distributed among the Catholic clergy’s 508 sexual abuse victims.
Although Mahoney has made it clear that he’s deeply sorry for whatever nightmares these victims have endured, many are skeptical about the real reasons behind this settlement. Was this just an easy way out so that Mahoney didn’t have to testify in the first trial? Who knows?
As a Catholic, I want to believe there’s still good people left in charge of my religion. But as these sexual abuse cases keep popping up, I can’t help but to keep walking farther away from the church.
We all wish our lives were like VHS tapes so we could literally destroy every bad moment. But it isn’t that easy and these victims will forever be scarred. Nobody really wins. No amount of money will restore the lost innocence or the trust in a religious institution that has been covering up for child molesters. Amen.
