The Associated Students, Inc. Senate passed a resolution in support of a 50/50 initiative Wednesday due to a limited amount of academic days left in the California State University, Long Beach Spring semester.
The 50/50 initiative would require that ASI senators visit 50 different clubs in 50 academic days each school year. During Wednesday’s meeting, ASI Vice President Nayiri Baghdassarian suggested broadening the requirements.
“I suggest we just take the word academic out because I think that with the plethora of ASI officers we have, I think we can do 50 clubs in less than 50 days,” Baghdassarian said to the senate.
ASI Sen. Chris Myrter said he believes that the bylaws should not be amended due to the fact that the resolution is asking for only 50 clubs and organizations in 50 days.
“I would like to see 100 days and 100 clubs,” Myrter said to the senate. “That was the main reason why we didn’t want to make this amend the bylaws.”
During the first reading of the resolution, members of the Senate wanted to make it amend the bylaws so there would not be a repetitive resolution every term. If the resolution were to amend the bylaws, future ASI officials would be responsible for attending clubs and organizations. By interacting with the student body directly, senators would become more transparent to students.
“I don’t want it to get swept under the rug kind of thing, like fall between the cracks,” Kling said to the senate. “I think it will just be kind of forgotten about and I like that it should be rewritten every term.”
ASI also passed the resolution to support student accessibility in classrooms on Wednesday.
This resolution would ask for Disabled Students Services to continue their support of students by providing seating accommodations for students who are morbidly obese, pregnant or have mobility issues.
The resolution also asks that CSULB Facilities Management monitor the amount of left-handed desks in all of the classrooms as well as place at least one large desk with two open chairs in every classroom.
The ASI senate also introduced a new bylaw amendment resolution to improve the effectiveness of ASI outreach.
The proposed bylaw amendment asks that ASI Board of Directors tables during two of their office hours out of the 12 they are required to have.
“This resolution would be a great way to keep senators accountable to what they say they are going to do, which is represent our constituents,” Myrter said.
Senators decided to leave the requirements for tabling vague so that senators could table wherever and whenever they feel would be most effective.
