Senior garners All-America honors

Senior Antwain Aguillard of the Long Beach State men’s volleyball team has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Men’s All-America Second Team, the AVCA announced Thursday.

This marks the first time Aguillard has earned AVCA All-America honors. The 6-foot-6 middle blocker leads the 49ers and ranks seventh in the nation with 1.21 blocks per set.

His 135 blocks this season ranks second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Aguillard has also compiled 213 kills (1.90/set) while hitting .355.

Earlier this year, Aguillard was tabbed the AVCA National Player of the Week on Jan. 31after averaging 2.83 kills and 1.67 blocks per set in a pair of 3-0 victories over Pacific and Stanford.

He also garnered MPSF Molten Player of the Week honors for his efforts at Pacific and Stanford when he combined for 41 kills and no errors on 59 swings for a blistering .695 hitting percentage.

Aguillard was recently named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first team after earning third-team honors in 2010.

BYU’s Taylor Sander was chosen as the AVCA Division I-II Men’s Newcomer of the Year, while the National Player of the Year will be announced at the NCAA Championship Banquet on May 4.

Aguillard and the No. 3-ranked 49ers will be in action tonight when they take on No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in a MPSF semifinal match at USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
