‘Harry Potter’ caters to fans, excludes first-timers

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” has broken box office records in its opening weekend by drawing in an estimated $62 million from pre-sold and opening day ticket purchases making it the fifth biggest single day in box office history. For you wizarding folk, that translates to quite a few gold galleons and silver sickles.

Directed by David Yates, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” is the seventh installment of the “Harry Potter” movies and the first half of J.K. Rowling’s final “Harry Potter” novel.

Harry (Daniel Radcliff), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) give their best acting performances yet as they spend a lengthy 146 minutes onscreen looking for the remaining Horcruxes to destroy the dark Lord Voldemort. In the meantime, Voldemort has grown stronger and has complete control over Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the Ministry of Magic.

The scenes are dark and intense, showcasing the multidimensional characters Harry, Ron and Hermione have become. However, the movie has a few disillusions for both the fanatics and first timers.

If you have seen the previous six movies, the seventh installment is just a continuation of your increasingly guilty pleasure that is your need for more and more “Harry Potter.” It is not a standalone movie like the previous films which have the traditional dramatic structure of the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.

The lack of intense magical fighting scenes and fantastical creatures denounces this installment as one of the tamer and relationship themed in the series so far and is mainly constructed as a long and complicated buildup for a maddening cliff hanger to be continued in Part two, which will be released in 2011.

As an added disappointment, some of the favorite characters such as Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis) and Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) are teased into the movie just enough to be sadly overlooked and deeply missed.

So if you are new to this fantastical franchise, firstly where have you been? And second, at this point it is too late so do not even try to catch up by watching this movie.

The story line jumps right into the panic of the wizard world with perplexing flashbacks, flash-forwards and dreams that can confuse even the most intelligent Ravenclaw. It unapologetically caters to the millions of fans and completely disregards the Harry Potter first years and muggles.

It seems that despite the major criticisms in lack of action, too much drama and frustrating ending, the “Harry Potter” fan will leave the theater feeling more than satisfied, content for another year before they can indulge in their final “Harry Potter” fix.
