Jimmy Eat World Rocks the Fox

Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World gives a remarkable performance during the "Invented" tour at the Fox Theater.

While on their “Invented” tour, Jimmy Eat World continues with another concert that rallied hundreds of fans around the Fox Theater in Pomona on Sept. 28  the same day the newest studio album was released, making the night extra special for everyone.

“It feels really good to do a show here the day the record comes out,” said Jim Adkins, lead singer of Jimmy Eat World. “It feels good [to be here]. It feels like we belong here.”

The theater opened their doors at 7 p.m., as did the box office for those not already waiting in wavy Disneyland-like lines to get in. Inside the theater, the pit was a heap of public intimacy as the non-assigned seats on both floors were overtaken. By 9 p.m., Jimmy Eat World took the stage as shouting fans overpowered the fairly small venue.

We Were Promised Jetpacks, now touring with Jimmy Eat World, opened the night. The Scottish indie-rock band warmed up the crowd with their unique musical styling of upbeat rifts and bubbly, emotionally tied lyrics.

In the middle of their set, WWPJ announced they had one album that was to release this year. Unfortunately, Adam Thompson, lead singer of WWPJ, said on stage, “The UPS guy left us a note on our door that pretty much fucked us over.” The audience laughed and some awed in disappointment.

Before too long, Jimmy Eat World began the show with “My Best Theory,” the newest single from the bands 7th studio album, Invented. The band had on stage female singer-songwriter, Courtney Andrews, to tour with them as well. Andrews also performs the backup vocals on five of the songs on the Invented album.

Their first set excited the audience in a coinciding jumping mass that followed “My Best Theory.” Hit singles, “Bleed American” and “Your New Aesthetic” from previous albums soon followed.

Each song chosen that night enticed a different reaction from the audience in front of the stage. A mini mosh pit was created during the song “Pain.” A total of three body surfers during the song “Big Casino” were thrown up in the air each time he sang, “Get up! Get up!”

“I thought [the show] was pretty awesome,” said Melissa Medici, a junior theology major from CSU Long Beach, “I got the new CD!”

When asked if she had heard the song previews on the Website before the album came out, she replied with “I heard it on stage.” She admitted to having no idea what the new album would sound like but she liked what she heard.

As the show came to a end and left the stage waving good-bye, a chanting riot among the crowd lifted for an encore. Jimmy Eat World returned to played a three-song encore, which concluded with the infamous song “The Middle.”

Whether a huge fan of the band or unaware of anything past their break-through album, no Jimmy Eat World concert would be complete without this song.

As for the new album, Adkins said that ‘Invented’ contains songs that are “closed narratives by themselves.”

“[We] never had the need to explain songs, or the band itself, to people,” Adkins said, “Everyone is going to listen to it and take something different out of it.”

Jimmy Eat World is continuing the “Invented” tour into the year, with some shows already sold-out in Los Angeles and in Europe. For more information about the band or the “Invented” tour, check out jimmyeatworld.com.
