The Cal State Long Beach Housing Office launched its first residence hall events and calendar website, “The Hall-Way,” last week.
The website, (http://gobeach.blogspot.com), was created for the residents in the residence halls to have easy access to information about the various events put on by the residence halls, as well as other happenings on and off campus.
“We were recognizing that many events weren’t being attended. Many students were not aware of them,” said Technical Coordinator for Housing & Residential Life Chris San Paolo.
San Paolo teamed up with Presidential Scholar Catherine Deerfield to create the new site. In the past, Deerfield has helped with the Channel 2 website in the residence halls.
“She’s really creative,” San Paolo said.
“It’s really helpful and organized,” said Parkside Commons RA Amber Watt. “It provides easy access to find out what’s going on in the halls.”
The Hall-Way provides complete information for Residence Hall Association meetings and events, Associated Students, Inc., LBSU athletics and links to popular destinations around the area.
“It is easy to look at and keep track of because we have so many events,” said Melissa Goodwin, a sophomore and Parkside Commons resident.
Residents are currently able to post comments and suggestions on the website. In the future, it might become more interactive where students can post their own pictures on the page.
“People like it, but we want to hear some feedback,” San Paolo said.
Over the summer, San Paolo and Deerfield found Blogspot.com and decided that it would be best for the website because it was free. They could control and access it easily for their needs.
By having the events and calendar posted online, updates are easier and can be made instantly as opposed to fliers and posters, San Paolo saids.
Before The Hall-Way, the Housing office website was the only online resource available. It only provided official information about the dorms, not about the events for residents.
“I feel like checking it right now to see what’s on there,” Goodwin said.
