The 49ers will host the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf tournament at the Virginia Country Club Thursday and Friday, starting at 7:30 a.m.
On the field this week includes Arizona, Colorado State, Houston, North Texas, Pacific, San Francisco, San Jose State, UC Irvine, US Santa Barbara, Texas-San Antonio, Long Beach State and the reining co-champion St. Mary’s.
Arkansas shared the title with St. Mary’s last year, but will not be attending this year.
During 1983 through 1994, Del Walker was the 49ers’ head coach. His influence in the early 90s was a big asset in keeping the program running when the school was discussing dropping it. Walker was a member of Virginia Country Club for 67 years until he passed back in January. Walker won seven club championships at Virginia.
Last year, the 49ers finished in 14th place with recorded score of 883 (293-289-301). The poor performance was partly due to two key players being out with injuries, including returning player Jeremy Keller, according to head coach Bob Livingstone.
However, the men have more experience under their belts this year, having already played in four events. Livingstone said this predicts a brighter forecast in the Del Walker tournament for the 49ers.
“The guys are very excited about this year’s event,” Livingstone said. “All of the younger guys have had the chance to get into some tournaments this fall, so everyone has college experience, and they know Virginia pretty well.”
Key player Michael Drake struggled to make par in the tournament last season, but he has improved his game, as his tie for sixth place at the St. Mary’s Tournament in September showed.
Livingstone is confident in his players, with four returning players out of seven on the roster.
“Everyone has improved, which is a good thing,” Livingstone said.
“We also passed a few teams, so that will help our confidence and give us a little momentum heading into Del Walker.”
