Senior earns first-team All-America honors in women’s javelin

Senior Randi Hicks led the Long Beach State track and field team on the second day of the NCAA Championships as she finished eighth overall in the women’s javelin Thursday at Drake Stadium.

Hicks’ performance earned her first-team All-America honors. She advanced to the finals with a toss of 161-02 on her first attempt of the day, which stood as the eighth-longest of the meet.

Hicks, who was also a 2010 All-American, posted the best finish by a 49er on the women’s side since Kim Heinz was seventh in the javelin in 2007.

Senior Colin Dunbar garnered second-team All-America honors with an 11th-place finish in the men’s hammer throw. Dunbar registered a distance of 212-03 on his second attempt of the day. He was also an honorable mention All-American in the discus.

Senior Nicholas Armstrong currently sits in 17th place in the decathlon with 6,178 points after eight events. Due to a weather delay, the javelin and 1500-meter event have yet to be completed. Armstrong’s best finish of the meet so far came in the discus throw where he took third with a lifetime-best 148-03.
