Men’s track in 1st at Cal-Nevada Championships

The Long Beach State men’s track and field team currently sits at the top of the standings with 46 points after the first day of the Cal-Nevada Championships on Saturday.

The 49ers scored in each of the first four field events. Leading the way were the javelin throwers with a trio of ‘Niners placing in the top-10.

Ben Woodruff took third with a lifetime-best 200-11, while Braden Keller wasn’t far behind with a season-long 199-00. Ryan Rosales finished ninth at 179-08.

Manny Neizer was third in the long jump with a season-best 24-02.50, while Nicholas Armstrong, who placed eighth, notched a lifetime-best 22-09.75. Armstrong also scored in the high jump, clearing 6-06.75 for fifth place.

LBSU added a duo of scorers in the hammer throw as Colin Dunbar was the runner-up (210-05). Rajan Bains also came in eighth at 177-09.

In the track events, Chris Lawson qualified for the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdle finals with a pair of fifth-place showings. Sam Jeter also advanced in the 400H with the second-best time of the day (52.76), while Nimrod Piggee qualified in the 110H with a season-best 14.46.

Richard Crawford advanced to the finals in the 200-meter with a season-low 21.85, while Cameron Gillett did the same in the 400-meter, crossing the finish line in 49.37 seconds.

Josh Ruff closed out the evening with a strong performance in the 10000-meter run, clocking in at 31:34.00 to take second overall.

Meanwhile, the women are currently in fourth place with 25 points.

The 49ers had a one-two finish in the women’s javelin event for the second time in three meets this season.

Tara Ross finished ahead of the pack with a season-best 163-00, while Randi Hicks was the runner-up at 159-11. Rebecca Hamilton also took 14th with a personal-best 120-11.

Kayla Kamaka scored in the pole vault as she finished ninth with a lifetime-best 11-11.75. That mark also puts her in a tie for seventh on LBSU’s all-time charts. Amanda Klinchuch and Cheryl Smith also posted season-highs in the pole vault.

Lynn Patu was the 49ers’ top finisher in the hammer, scoring for The Beach with a lifetime-best 155-00.

On the track, Shakina Phillips led the way, advancing to the finals in both hurdle events. She finished second in the 400H prelims with a lifetime-best 61.81, which ranks her eighth in school history.

Phillips also took sixth in the 100H prelims at 14.30, while Kristen Kiefer added an eighth-place performance to qualify for the finals.

In the 10000-meter run, both Michelle Thompson and Prism Garcia scored as they finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Thompson clocked in at 37:59.48, while Garcia was right behind her at 37:59.49.

Also notching season-bests were Saedra Wright in the 400-meter dash (58.58) and Dee Lars in the 200m (25.39).

LBSU wraps up action at the Cal-Nevada Championships today. The field events begin at 11:30 a.m., while the track events are scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
