“The Really Really Good Comedy Show” has come a long way since its first show in September 2010. I’ll never forget hosting for the first time on stage at The Nugget.
I got to the punchline of my very first joke, and right as I said it, an obnoxiously loud “David! Cheeseburger and french fries!” totally drowned out the most crucial part of my joke.
After getting no laughs, I moved on to my next joke. The same exact thing happened with the whole “Julie! Pizza!” ordeal.
It was a long 10 minutes for me on stage. Luckily, that hasn’t happened since. We’ve come a long way since that first show.
I graduated Cal State Long Beach last semester. I’m finally done. Never going back. Done forever! Well, maybe not forever. In fact, I’ll be back with students on the first week of school.
“The Really Really Good Comedy Show,” a monthly standup comedy show at The Nugget that I’ve been running for two years, will return on Thursday, Aug. 30.
Within the last few years, standup comedians from Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime, MTV, you-name-it, have graced the stage at The Nugget. Every show has been a big success, and this year I hope to top that with even better comedians and bigger crowds.
It’s weird for me, coming off of a summer of touring and doing club shows, to come back and have a home base again at The Nugget.
Standup is such a complex art form, and adding the marketing and promotional aspects to the mix really complicates things. This year in particular will be a challenge for me, since I won’t be on campus as much to market the monthly show.
Many people may think that a free monthly comedy show on a college campus would be pretty easy to pack out, but that’s just not the case.
With that being said, check out Pat Leborio, Chris “Bane” Zee and myself during the free “The Really Really Good Comedy Show” on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. at The Nugget.
