Big West honors softball, women’s hoops

Long Beach State junior guard Lauren Sims (above) was named the Big West Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday. Sims was joined by the softball team’s Kristen Pocock (below), who was named co-Field Player of the Week along with UC Davis’ Kelly Harman.

The Big West Conference recognized Long Beach State juniors Kristen Pocock and Lauren Sims as Player of the Week in their respective sports Monday.

Pocock, a catcher on the softball team, earned co-Field Player of the Week after going 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs while drawing seven walks over the weekend in San Diego. She reached base 80 percent of the time and slugged 1.000 as the 49ers posted a 2-3 record against a Campbell/Cartier Classic field that included three ranked opponents.

Pocock shares the honor with UC Davis’ Kelly Harman.

Sims helped lead the women’s basketball team to its first back-to-back wins of the season.

The guard scored 20 or more points in both games, extending her streak to four consecutive contests. Sims posted a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double — her first this season and second of her career — in a 63-50 win over Cal State Northridge. Against Texas-Pan American, Sims tied her career high with 22 points to lead LBSU to a 78-58 non-conference victory.

Sims shot a combined 13-of-22 (59 percent) in both contests, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. She also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in that span.
