Beach Roundup

No runner in the history of Long Beach State track and field ran as fast as Jimmy Grawbow did in the indoor 5000-meter race at the Huskey Invitational in Seattle on Saturday.

Grabow’s time (13:44.07) was the seventh fastest time at the distance in the world in 2007. The senior runner automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with his performance, and is the first 49er ever to qualify for the event automatically.

Women’s Basketball With its 20th loss of the season, the 2007 Long Beach State women’s basketball team now has the dubious distinction of losing the most games in program history.

The 49ers (5-20, 2-8) lost to visiting Cal Poly 67-58 on Thursday and then to UC Santa Barbara 69-55 at The Walter Pyramid Saturday night.

Softball The Kim Sowder era has officially begun, with LBSU dropping four of its first five games in the Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State.

The 49ers (1-4) lost to Oregon 3-0 and to Wisconsin 5-4 on Friday. LBSU recorded its first win of the season over Syracuse on Saturday, winning 12-3, but later in the day fell to Texas 10-3.

On Sunday, LBSU fell to tournment host Arizona State 6-5.

Women’s Tennis The 49ers swept their second consecutive match in a row, beating Cal State Northridge 7-0 at the 49er Campus Courts Saturday afternoon.

LBSU (3-1, 2-0) won all six single matches in straight sets and were also victorious in the three doubles matches.

Men’s Volleyball LBSU cruised through Cal Baptist in a non-conference match Friday night at The Walter Pyramid, winning 30-27, 30-25 and 30-25.

Women’s Water Polo The 49ers won two of their opening three matches of the season, beating Princeton 8-7 and Cal State Bakersfield 9-8. LBSU did lose its season opener to Hartwick 10-8.
