Beach softball collects second consecutive doubleheader sweep

Freshman Hannah De Gaetano garnered five hits, while freshman Sarah Carrasco drove in three runs to lead the Long Beach State softball team to its fifth and sixth consecutive victories at Cal Poly on Friday. 

The 49ers picked up a 3-2 victory before completing the sweep with a win over the Mustangs.

De Gaetano combined for a 5-for-7 performance two runs scored, while Carrasco was 4-for-7 with three RBI and two runs.  Senior Christina Schallig was 3-for-8 with two RBI.

Long Beach State (30-13, 8-3 Big West) will look for a three-game series sweep over Cal Poly (6-31, 2-9 Big West) Saturday when the two teams play at Noon.

Game 1: Long Beach State 3, Cal Poly 2

Schallig had two RBI including the game winner in the seventh inning to lead Long Beach State to a 3-2 win in game one of a doubleheader. 

Schallig delivered a RBI groundout to score Carrasco in the top of the seventh to give the 49ers the lead.  Carrasco, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, led off the inning with a double to center field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Liz Javier.

Junior Taylor Petty (5-4) gave up no runs and just two hits in 3.2 innings to get the win in relief of freshman Erin Jones-Wesley. 

LBSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Carrasco doubled down the left field line to score pinch runner Emily Gregorio to give the 49ers the advantage.

Cal Poly rallied for a pair of runs, one in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the fourth, to take the lead.  Schallig tied the score in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single scoring Alisha Rosen.

De Gaetano went 2-for-3 at the plate to join Carrasco with multiple hits.  Eight different 49ers had at least one hit as LBSU piled up 11 hits.

Game 2: Long Beach State 7, Cal Poly 1

The 49ers broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

De Gaetano started the inning with a double to right center and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Carrasco.  Javier followed with a run-scoring single to put the 49ers up 2-0.  After a single by Schallig put runners on first and second, freshman Karli Sandoval double to right center scoring both Javier and Schallig to make it 4-0.

The 49ers added to the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  De Gaetano sparked the inning again with a leadoff double before scoring on a single by Carrasco.  Javier added a RBI triple to score Carrasco and give the 49ers a 6-0 lead.

Sandoval made it 7-0 in the top of the seventh when she blasted her third home run of the season to left field.

Senior Brooke Turner (9-5) picked up the win for the 49ers allowing just one run on three this with eight strikeouts.

De Gaetano was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the game, while Sandoval went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Javier added a pair of hits and two RBI, while Carrasco had three RBI. LBSU finished with 13 hits.
