A group of law enforcement officials apprehended two Long Beach residents, last week, suspected of burglarizing at least four Southern California universities, including an Associated Students Inc. office at Cal State Long Beach.
The suspects are allegedly connected with burglaries occurring at the University of California, Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Poly Pomona and CSULB.
“To make a long story short, we were all looking for the same guy,” University Police Lt. Scot Willey said.
Willey explained that law enforcement officials from all four universities realized they had been looking for the same suspects after University Police uploaded information regarding the case on a computer database called Tracker.
The two suspects, 28-year-old Karim Patrece Davis and 25-year-old Latoya Gray are not believed to be students, UCI spokesman Laura Rico told the Daily Pilot.
According to Willey, the suspects were purchasing items with stolen credit cards and then returning them for cash.
These returns ultimately led the law enforcement officials to the suspects’ Long Beach residence.
“The one thing about criminals is that they are always going to make a mistake,” Willey said.
Police were able to recover some of the objects stolen, including items that connected the suspects to burglaries committed at CSULB.
But Willey said police were unable to recover ASI Treasurer Michael Quibuyen’s laptop.
The laptop was allegedly stolen from the ASI Student Government Office in July while staff members were out for lunch.
He told the Daily 49er that no student government information was located on it.
Willey said UCI police detectives led the case, but were aided by all four universities.
University Police, the Long Beach Police Department and UCI police were involved in the apprehension of the suspects.
Two others were arrested at the Long Beach residence because of outstanding warrants. Jacob Amir Qureshi and Jason Robert Walker were arrested along with Davis and Gray.
