ASI resolves in opposition to House Pell Grant Bill

An Associate Students Inc. resolution opposing cuts to federal Pell Grants was passed on its third reading Wednesday.

On Feb. 22, the House of Representatives passed a bill, which cuts individual Pell Grants by an average of $800. More than 118,000 Cal State University students receive $5,050 in Pell Grant aid to pay for tuition, according to Southern California Public Radio.

The resolution, sponsored by ASI Senator Stephen Thomas, emphasizes that CSU students are the largest recipients of federal Pell Grants.

More than 9 million students nationwide rely on the federal Pell Grants to fund their education, 1 million of which were California students in the 2011 fiscal year, according to the Cal State University website.

The resolution also asks congressional representatives to vote against any bill that cuts financial aid to students.
