More than 100,000 spectators flocked to Rainbow Harbor on Saturday for Flugtag, Red Bull’s human-powered flight craft competition.
Saturday’s event marked the first-ever national competition in its 12-year history. Competitions were held in five cities simultaneously, including Washington D.C., Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago and Long Beach.
Cal State Long Beach’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers team “Viaje de los Muertos” participated in the event and won 3rd place in the People’s Choice competition.
The world record for distance was also shattered by bay area team “The Chicken Whisperers,” gliding 258 feet before landing gracefully into the water below. The title had previously been held by a German team that flew 229 feet at a 2012 competition in Mainz, Germany.
