With an opportunity to give students an inside look of the sports industry, Spectrum SportsNet invited women from the University of Southern California and Cal State Long Beach to its Women in Sports Night Wednesday.

The more than 20 women from Cal State Long Beach and the University of Southern California were given a chance to get a tour of the facility and were then able to ask the six-women panel a variety of questions about the sports field.

The panel included: on-air talent Jamie Maggio, Lakers Director of Media Relations Alison Bogli, on-air talent Kelli Tennant, Los Angeles Times reporter Lindsey Thiry, Laker Nation’s Serena Winter and Charter Spectrum SportsNet producer Bettina Shore.

During the Q&A portion of the evening each panelists had the chance to talk about their journeys to their current positions and the work that went into it.

Each panelist talked about how it’ll take hard work, but the students shouldn’t be disappointed if they don’t make it to their dream job right out of college.

Maggio recalled a story of how she worked taking maintenance tickets for awhile before she finally landed a position as an anchor. Winter also talked about driving to Orange County to be a valet driver.

Hearing about the struggles and adversity the panelists overcame was some of the biggest takeaways that left a lasting impression on those that attended.

“It was incredibly eye-opening,”CSULB journalism and international studies major Asjia Garner said. “It was one of those events that is very unique, especially to see a women’s perspective in sports especially since it’s a male dominated field.”

Along with giving students an idea what to expect some students, left with more concrete reasons of why they’d like to get a job in the field.

“This just solidified why I want to be in this field,” CSULB student Ashley Murray said. “I already knew working in broadcast field, but seeing the operations was great.”
