She is able to balance school, her three children and her sanity with grace. She wears the essence of hard-worker on her sleeve. Diligent, powerful and tenacious are a few words that describe the veteran, mother and newly-elected California State University, Long Beach Associated Students, Inc. Treasurer Wendy Lewis.
Sitting with Wendy Lewis is both intimidating and inspirational.
The Secretary of Veteran Affairs emits a Wonder Woman aura that solidifies her credibility as a communicator, leader and problem-solver.
“Being an elected treasurer is most important to me as it proves that the students trust me to make financial decisions in their best interests,” Lewis said. “It’s also an exciting opportunity for me to apply my experiences to this position.”
Lewis has more than eight years of financial experience under her belt, including her background in handling scholarships and funding. Her main goal is to create a scholarship workshop program in which she works with students one-on-one.
“I want applications to scholarships to be at an all time high,” Lewis said. “[It shows] that CSULB does have a need, thus encouraging the community to invest in its future generation.”
As promised during her campaign, the scholarship workshops will begin as soon as the next semester begins, Lewis said.
Lewis’ upcoming schedule will be stacked classes, three kids at home and the new treasurer position does not faze Lewis.
“I pride myself in the quality of my time management skills and seek out opportunities where I can multitask without sacrificing quality of work,” Lewis said.
Lewis will fill the position of marketing major Kalien Clark, who last semester as treasurer managed 26 California State University, Long Beach committees, handled scholarship funding and grants and guided several organizations.
“I appreciated the opportunity to better serve the students and to give back to my community,” Clark said. “My advice for Wendy would be to plan out her entire term during the summer months because during the school year this job can become hectic.”
Clark explained that she learned valuable leadership and time management skills as ASI treasurer. She is confident that Lewis will fill the position admirably and will continue to create a bridge between students and ASI.
“Wendy is extremely hard working and has the experience needed to excel at this job,” Clark said.
Lewis’ main concerns as she enters the ASI treasurer position is coming off as intimidating and not being able to please students that come to her with problems.
“I want them to know that I am approachable and I love to laugh and have a joke for almost every conversation,” Lewis explained. “I don’t take life too seriously, but I am a person that is focused on excellence and results.”
As a government of students and for students, Lewis said she would be able to relate to the diverse CSULB student body. Along with the scholarship workshops, Lewis intends to open the doors a little more to her office.
“I plan to really push the envelope of transparency, especially as it relates to financial matters,” Lewis said, “and encourage all students to find an interest in their student government.”
