It’s one thing to sing about break-ups, and its another thing to sing about sex, drugs and partying. But when you get a group of young people, who love life and want to spread the good vibrations to as many people as they can, you get Frisky Uncle Nutrition (F.U.N).
This 15-member experimental jam band is reminiscent of The Beach Boys, Brand New and Queen. Jon Bolin, who works for Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR) and is a senior history/religious studies major at Cal State Long Beach, fronts the group. The group’s sole purpose is to have fun, make people happy and raise money for charity.
While performing at diPiazza’s Friday night, it was apparent F.U.N succeeds at making people happy. As they played into the evening, the crowd smiled, laughed and danced contagiously along with Bolin and lead guitarist/singer/writer Rocky Nicholson the III. The two radiate the group’s positive antics. Bolin oddly pretended to play with a guitar controller from “Rock Band” for roughly half the set.
It was easy to see that positive energy is their primary source of inspiration, as many of those in attendance seemed to be good friends who all loved the music. There was no lack of hugging or smiles as many fans seemed to be close friends who shared mutual comroderrey for the motif of this inspirational rock project.
In times where rock ‘n’ roll no longer has its edgy appeal, and electronic music like dub-step and trance rule the airwaves, it’s refreshing to see kids and people of any age still getting out for rock shows.
It’s difficult to catch a F.U.N show as many of the members have complex schedules.
Bolin said, “It’s almost impossible to schedule practices and do more shows with a band of 15 members.”
Some of the members have been known to pop up on Second Street for random street performances, where anyone who passes by is welcome to join in and beat on a bongo.
It’s not everyday that you find a band composed of such an eclectic group of individuals who are all brought together by a mutual cause. Alec Loshonkhl and Miles Jensen are both music majors at the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSULB. Loshonkl plays the trumpet and studies music composition, and Miles plays the keyboard and studies Jazz music. The two are both very talented musicians and add a nice level of professionalism to this happy project.
Backing vocalist, Kristen Desmond, a film and electronics major at CSULB, said “Not wanting to make money and performing just for the fun it makes this band succeed more. It’s a lot of fun and I just want to spread that.”
Desmond’s sister, Michelle, brought rich color to the show as she danced and performed the lyrics in sign language.
All proceeds raised that evening will go to the Operation Legacy organization, a charity which helps the growing population of service men and women who become homeless once they return to civilian life.
Bolin said, “We really believe in this organization and its cause. It’s amazing how many military people have difficulty returning to civilian life. And women veterans are among the fastest growing population of homeless in America.”
The last song, “Sunshine,” was of their set was catchy, upbeat and the lyrics were a partial spin-off of Don Mclean’s “America Pie.” Nicholson rallied the crowed up by telling a story of childhood fantasies and encouraged everyone to dance during the songs inspiring breakdown.
