Rock music festivals to burn up the summer

A Day to Remember plays at the 2009 Vans Warped Tour in Carson.

Mayhem Festival

By Janine Zuniga, Assistant Diversions Editor

Once finals are over, tense metalheads can get their pissed off fix at this summer’s Mayhem Festival, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. The cross-country tour stops in San Bernardino at the San Manuel Amphitheater on July 9 with headlining bands like Disturbed, Godsmack, Megadeth and more. Dethklok and Testament will also make a special appearance for this specific tour date.

The festival is broken up into three stages: the main stage, the Extreme stage and the Jagermeister mobile stage. The performances from the bands are usually elaborate and, above all, very entertaining.

And if it is anything like last year’s event, it will be a very hot July afternoon so sunblock and loose clothing is a must. A sweater in the evening is also recommended if you’re not engulfed in the pit. However, it can’t be ignored that patrons of the festival will still wear heavy amounts of black clothing.

It’s an all-around fairground festival from one stage to the other with pop-up food tents, meet-and-greet areas and Hacky Sack circles aplenty on the lawn. Once the main stage opens up for the main event, the free-roaming guests will populate the stadium and usually fill the entire lawn. Festival attendees should also be warned that fires on the lawn are also normal. After all, it is a metal festival.

Tickets range from $20 (lawn) to $55 (orchestra pit). For more information about the festival and the bands, visit rockstarmayhemfest.com.

Vans Warped Tour

By Brittany Woolsey, Diversions Editor

The festival with scorching heat, a diverse music scene and all-around good vibes returns this summer — the Vans Warped Tour.

When it began in 1995, Warped Tour was nicknamed the “Punk Rock Summer Camp.” Bands such as No Doubt, Sublime and Deftones, as well as skaters entertained attendees. Since then, it has evolved into an eclectic group of music, including hardcore, ska, pop, punk and more.

This year, a variety of bands will perform on several stages. Headlining performers include Gym Class Heroes, Less Than Jake, Paramore, A Day to Remember and more.

Because of the heat at most of the venues, it is recommended to wear light clothing, bring some unopened bottles of water and apply a lot of suncreen. Attendees should also arrive earlier to find out set times — presented on a huge inflatable schedule usually toward the middle of the venue — and to hear some of the lesser-known bands.

This summer, Warped Tour’s Southern California dates include Pomona on July 1, Ventura on July 3, San Diego on Aug. 9 and Carson on Aug. 10.
