OC Fair provides amusement

COSTA MESA – For anyone who needs to take a break in a cheap amusement park, the Orange County Super Fair offers plenty of fun rides and delicious food.

The fair, located in Costa Mesa on 88 Fair Drive, is a great place to shop, eat food and ride thrilling attractions. Admission costs $10, but Ralph’s offers a coupon if shoppers purchase more than $10 worth of groceries. The coupon is good for four admission tickets for only $4. Parking costs $5 at the fair parking lot, but the price is definitely worth it.

When people enter the fair, they should first head to the Main Mall to visit “Weird Al’s Brain,” a 3-D comedy show featuring Weird Al Yankovic. In the show, random people and celebrities ask Al questions about how the brain works. Probably the best joke is from Fabio, who asks Al, “Is it true that I use only 10 percent of my brain?” Al also sings in a fancy 3-D music video teaching kids about the brain at the end of the show.

Students can then check out some of the antique collections in the exhibit promenade. Some of the best collections include a collection of old 1960s lunch boxes, one of which includes the defunct cartoon character Adam Ant. There’s also a beautiful exhibition of paintings and photography from local artists in the promenade.

Although it’s hard to find low prices for food at the fair, some of the food venders offer discounts from noon  to 4 p.m. on Thursday for the special $2 Tasting Menu. For example, Giantburgers sells small hot dogs for $2 each.
Orange Julius sells their famous smoothies for only $3.50 in the fair square. The daily events calendar pamphlet also includes coupons for the venders.

If someone is really looking forward to tasting bizarre new foods, that person can try out the fried Twinkies, fried Oreos or the fried frog legs at Chicken Charlie’s in the fair square. Just don’t eat too much – these goodies are packed with fat.

The venders with the best food, however, are in the fair square area. Pink’s is selling their scrumptious hot dogs. Try out the Rosie O’Donnell, a juicy chili dog with mustard and sauerkraut, for only $5.75. Also, look into eating at the numerous barbecue vendors. Keep in mind that most of the barbecue food is more than  $10.

Thrill-seekers can ride on the numerous scary attractions in the carnival area. Each ticket costs 50 cents. Avoid the overpriced roller coaster and pay $4.50 for nine tickets to ride the Tango, a whirling pendulum with three quick rotating arms, hanging people 50 feet over the ground as the pendulum swings around and around.

If scary rides stir up too much nausea, ride on some of the lovely slow rides. Board the La Grande Wheel, the biggest ferris wheel in the park, for nine tickets. People also can relax on the Sky Ride gondolas for seven tickets.

Even people uninterested in the rides and the food can shop at any of the booths in the Marketplace Village or at the Carnival, Parade and Festival of Products buildings in the Main Mall. Women can shop for low-priced necklaces and bracelets. The Festival of the Products has a Dippin Dots booth, which sells a small cup of its famous chewy ice cream dots for $3.50.

There’s plenty to do at the Orange County Super Fair. The fair’s attractions and food are so irresistible that students may want to visit again and again.
