64-year-old motorist killed in Long Beach crash

Thaddeus Tran, 64, died last Thursday after driving into a flood-control channel near Cal State Long Beach’s College Park Drive.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the Westminster resident was driving alone in his silver Toyota Tacoma. The driver lost control of his vehicle while heading west on College Park Drive. He went into the San Gabriel flood channel on Studebaker Road and 7th Street, where Tran and his vehicle partly submerged into the channel.

When the LBPD responded to the report at approximately 9:20 a.m., Tran was in full cardiac arrest, according to fire department spokesman Matt Dobberpuhl.

The Long Beach Fire Department transported Tran to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died from his injuries, LBPD spokesperson Sgt. Rico Fernandez said in a press release.

According to LBPD investigators, the motorist was believed to be experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the single vehicle collision.

Witnesses said Tran was driving erratically prior to the accident.

The crash site was near the 2006 fatal plunge of Belmont Park’s Amanda Carter, 16, who helped influence the city to erect barriers around the San Gabriel channel.
