A-list stand-up comedy shows for a student budget

Meltdown Comics is a comic book store by day and a comedy venue by night.

NerdMelt Theater

Tucked into the back room of the Meltdown comic book store on Sunset Boulevard is the NerdMelt Theater. NerdMelt hosts some of the most interesting comedy shows in Southern California.

Improvisational comedy, stand-up, live podcast recordings and more are all fair game in this small intimate venue. For stand-up fans, “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,” starring comedians Kumail Nanjiani and Jonah Ray, takes place every Wednesday night and has featured people like Louis C.K., Robin Williams and Aziz Ansari.

NerdMelt is one of the most fun and unique venues in Los Angeles and is constantly hosting cheap shows that are worth checking out.

The Super Serious Show

The Super Serious Show takes place on the third Thursday of each month in the strangely named Cafe Club Fais Do-Do. The venue is a ramshackle hole-in-the-wall old restaurant, and some of the seating is made up of old couches.

The Super Serious Show is more than just a comedy show. Every month it features a variety of stand-up acts, sketch comedy, improv and even video segments.

Before the show, you can mingle with people over beer and wine – which is included with the $10 ticket – and visit the food truck out in the back.

For those looking for a variety of things to laugh at, this is the show to go to.

What’s Up, Tiger Lily?

What’s Up, Tiger Lily? is a stand-up comedy fan’s dream show. Originally conceived by comedians Maria Bamford and Melinda Hill, the show balances an extremely laid-back atmosphere with A-list stars and hilarious up-and-comers.

Located in the Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill, a little restaurant on Sunset Boulevard, the show has no cover charge at all. There is a two-drink minimum, but the show is worth it.

Every Monday night the show brings in a list of hilarious comedians, some of them recognizable and some of them newcomers. Along with the list, there are often unexpected drop-ins from comedians like Patton Oswalt and Marc Maron.
