The Hayworth Theater in Downtown Los Angeles is taking audience members into the sick, twisted and gut bustlingly hilarious minds of two serial killers in “Silence! The Musical,” the unauthorized parody of “The Silence of the Lambs.”
From the moment the show begins, it is apparent that this is going to be a comic masterpiece. When the music starts, the ensemble, dressed as lambs, enter the stage and begin with the song “Silence of the Lambs.”
The song introduces Clarice Starling (Christine Lakin) who does a spot on impression of Jodie Foster’s West Virginian accent, causing the crowd to erupt into laughter almost immediately. Agent Starling is an up and coming FBI agent who is about to enter the disturbed minds of two serial killers.
“If it leaves you feeling hollow, it scared the sh-t right out of you.” Sings the lambs as they exit the stage, and the story begins.
The plot of “Silence!” follows the storyline of the academy award-winning movie in the loosest form possible. Starling is assigned to gather information about a new serial killer dubbed Buffalo Bill (Stephen Bienskie) and in order to get into his mind she must confront the notorious Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Davis Gaines).
In her quest to find Buffalo Bill, Agent Starling works alongside many peculiar characters. The main character being Dr.Lecter, to whom she must divulge her deepest, darkest, secrets in order to get him to cooperate. The plot points in the film make for some very comedic opportunities in the musical version.
“Silence!” takes the most vulgar parts of the movie and makes it the centerpiece for almost every musical number. The infamous quote, “I can smell your c–t” from the movie makes its way into the play when Lecter dives into a dream sequence along with a song titled “If I Could Smell Her C–t.” The song reveals Lecter’s desire to be with Starling, and not eat her.
This song had the crowd laughing so hard, most of the racy lyrics were hard to make out, but the point came across as Dream Clarice (Melissa Sandvig) and Dream Hannibal (Karl Warden) danced around the stage smelling each other’s genitals.
As the show goes, Bill is finally revealed to be a man who longs to be a woman, but being denied a sex change, he decides to resort to the sinister practice of murdering and wearing the skin of hefty women.
Bill’s most comedic performances came from the songs, “I’d F–k Me” and “Put the F–king Lotion in the Basket.” Both songs showcased the humor hidden in this terrifying movie character.
Overall, the show was a riot. Audience members left with a smile on their face, and a dirty song in their heart. Watching the film “The Silence of the Lambs” is not necessary before the performance, but in order to understand some of the best jokes, it is highly recommended..
