CSULB students rock out in Twice Postal

Going to school is stressful these days. Students have to fight for parking, rush to gather materials for class and dodge the masses of people around them. The members of Twice Postal not only have to juggle those problems, but they also have to find a way to squeeze in band practice.
Twice Postal is a band based out of Garden Grove comprised of vocalist Evan Schwieger, drummer Joey Estrada and guitarist Ryan Cecil who are all Cal State University students.
Schwieger and Estrada are both sophomores at Cal State Long Beach, while Cecil studies at Cal State Fullerton.
“We all came from different influences,” Schwieger said trying to describe what genre of the band.
Dummer Estrada continued by saying “It’s like funky-indie-alternative rock.
Schwieger and Estrada have been playing together for seven years; however, they have only been taking their music seriously recently. Their first concert as a band was last December, but only Schwieger and Cecil performed.
“We had a band before,” Estrada said, “and then that broke up. Then I stopped playing, but [Evan and Ryan] convinced me to start playing again after a while.”
The band is now preparing for their upcoming concert at Chain Reaction in Anaheim as the opening act for The Humdrum Rebellion.
“I feel like we kind of focus on what we’re doing a lot,” Estrada said, “and then we don’t pay attention on putting on a good show.”
Schwieger said that the band is trying to work on that, as well as learn how to feed off each other to make a better show. He said that he wants to interact with the audience better next time they play a show.
“It’s hard [to practice] with people’s schedules and work,” Schwieger said. “We’ll probably [practice] on a weekly basis.”
Recently, the band has been going through some internal problems. Their bassist had to leave because he lives in Chico, Calif., far from the rest of the band. Twice Postal has already hired a new bassist, but is unsure how the newest member will perform. However, the band members are optimistic and look forward to the next performance.
When the band is not practicing for an upcoming concert, they like to do their own things. Schwieger recently came back from a summer studying abroad in South Korea, but usually he likes to go surfing.
“I practice [on my off time],” Estrada said. “When Evan was gone, I finally started practicing. But now that he’s back, I don’t anymore,” he continued jokingly.
The band composes their own music and only does covers when they are practicing, never during a performance.
“Me and Ryan will usually write a guitar thing,” Schwieger said. “Then I’ll write the lyrics, and we’ll show it to Joey later.”
Catch their next performance on Sunday at Chain Reaction in Anahiem at 8 p.m.
