Food face-off: In-N-Out vs. Five Guys

In-N-Out

Cool thing about In-N-Out: They have a “secret” menu.

My order: A cheeseburger with no onions, fries and a Neapolitan shake.

Price: $6.19

The cheeseburger: The bun is toasted, the cheese is gooey, the lettuce and tomato are fresh, and the thousand island spread gives it that kick that makes it stand out from the rest.

Five Guys

Cool thing about Five Guys: They have free peanuts and a wide selection of toppings to add at no charge.

My order: The Little Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mayo and mustard, Cajun-style French fries and a Cherry Coke.

Price: $10.63

The Cheeseburger: The bun isn’t toasted and they were a little heavy-handed with the condiments, which makes the entire burger mushy and less than appetizing. Getting to choose your own toppings is cool, but Five Guys should really put more of their focus on the basics. This cheeseburger is only a few notches better than McDonalds.

The fries: The fries are thick, more like crispy potato wedges than your typical French fry. The Cajun seasoning is pleasantly spicy, but not overwhelming. They’re super generous with the fries. In addition to filling up the cup with fries, they also filled up half the bag with more fries.

The Cherry Coke: It is incredibly lame that Five Guys doesn’t sell milkshakes. I don’t get a shake every time I get a burger, but I want to have the option. But props to Five Guys for carrying Cherry Coke; most places don’t.
