
Men/Women Coats
This season is all about unique coats. Cool outerwear is the way to go with soft fabrics like velvet or warm tweed. Long Beach’s Retro Row on Fourth Street and other local thrift stores can accommodate to the warm fashion for the cool Southern California weather. Dr. Suzanne Marshall, Cal State Long Beach Program Director of the Fashion Merchandising and Design Department recommends coats are a must have.
“Coats seem to be a necessary accessory this season.” Marshall said, “Go buy yourself a coat that make you stand out in the crowd.”
Warm Knits
Various styles and colors are seen in this season’s fashionable coats. Warm, thick knits are nothing new to the winter textile fashion. Free People is known for their warm, elegant and soft-knit sweaters. The long, warm and comfortable knits cost $128. However, a similar finish can be found at the local Team Amvets thrift store (3315 E. South Street) for $9.95.
Velvet Blazers
Unique fabric on blazers are the ultimate fashion statement this winter. Gucci’s Fall/Winter collection utilized velvet textiles on blazers of gorgeous blues and greens. Free People is also setting the trend for velvet-colored blazers with colors like navy blue and maroon. Holly Skinner, a fashion merchandising professor at CSULB is a fan of the velvet blazers.
“The velvet blazers are a personal favorite trend I can’t wait to rock this winter,” Skinner said.
A similar velvet jacket can be found for $9.95 at the Team Amvets store (3315 E. South Street).
Sequined Jackets
Risk-taking individuals will be wearing the ultimate shiny trend this season. One will not go unnoticed with bright, fun and shimmery sequined jackets. For those rolling into the new year or enjoying a fun night out on the town, this jacket will be life of the party. Dolce and Gabbana are one of the high-end designers who showcased the sequined jacket this winter. Urban Outfitters are contributing the bright detailing on their jackets, starting at $138. The AIDS Assistant Thrift store (2011 E. 4th Street) carries a shimmery jacket for $15. Pair this jacket with leggings, a basic dress and wedge booties for a complete outfit.
The Sequined Bag
A look is not complete for a woman if she doesn’t have her handbag. This winter season calls for a one-of-a-kind elegant bag to spice up any outfit. Dolce and Gabbana displays the sparkly purse with a gold chain. Urban Outfitters is also a fan of the shimmery handbag and sells one for $49. However, a similar gorgeous bag can be found at The Feed Store (2001 E. 4th Street) for $10.
The Oversized Coat
With cooler temperatures, these coats will provide the essential warmth with their longer lengths and wider cuts. These are not your regular fitted coats; they are meant to be bigger and fall over the body.
“[We will be seeing more of] long coats and even longer ankle floor gazing coats we will be seeing more of,” Marshall said.
The Assistance League of Long Beach Thrift and Vintage (2100 E. 4th Street) and Team Amvets carry men and women oversized coats for $6 to $10. A great way to pull off the coat trend is to wear it with a basic tee, cropped pants and loafers.
This winter season has much in store for those fashionistas ready to impress. Shopping locally will save you tons, keep you warm and will fill your closet with fashionable options this winter.
