There was blood everywhere. Eyes and arms were hanging by pieces of skin. The crumbs of left over brains were found on hands and around mouths. This was not a scene from a movie, but from real life.
The fourth annual Zombie Walk took place Saturday in Downtown Long Beach. The event was created by the non-profit organization Long Beach Cinematheque. The undead from all over Southern California came out to the event in order to help break the world record of largest zombie walk.
The Zombie Walk was an all day event for all ages. Zombie enthusiasts were able to watch and rock out with bands playing at the Tinderbox Stage near Third Street.
Most of the bands played heavy metal music. Kids hid behind their parents, expressing their distaste of the bands playing. They covered their ears as they closed their eyes giving a sense of what the atmosphere was going to be that night — filled with anger, fear, and despair.
People were also able to get their makeup done at the Promenade Square on First Street. Makeup artists created elaborate skin rips and bite marks for those who wanted them. They also put on simple blood stains around the mouth for children who did not want to look too scary.
People from Occupy Long Beach also joined in on the festivities of the night. They dragged their feet like any other zombie while wearing signs relating to the occupy movement. One sign read “We EAT the 99%,” making fun of the occupy movement’s mantra “We are the 99%.”
After the walk, the zombies of Occupy Long Beach held signs and groaned in front of banks. They were there to remind bystanders about the occupy movement, as well to tell them to take their money out of banks on Nov. 5.
Besides the Zombie Walk, Thrill the World Los Angeles attempted to break the world record of largest choreographed “Thriller” Mass Dance in the world. Dancers of all levels came early to learn the choreography from the Thrill the World team in hopes of being a part of the world record.
That night, as soon as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” began playing on speakers from all over, zombies stopped in their places and began dancing. From a woman dressed in a bloody wedding gown and an axe in her head to a jock with no arms and exposed gut, the undead danced as if it was their last performance on earth.
After the dance, the zombies slowly dragged themselves in front of the Long Beach Convention Center to participate in the attempt of being the world’s largest zombie walk.
The DJ played some hauntingly-eerie music as the living dead hauled their broken legs in an effort to walk. They moaned and growled as the living ran away in fear of being bitten. Women and children shrieked and hid as zombies chased and surrounded them. Some people carried weapons in hopes of defending themselves from the brain and flesh cravers. But their attempts to escape were all in vain. Hoards of undead enclosed on them.
After the walk, the undead descended upon Downtown Long Beach searching for fun and frightening the living.
