Back to school movies to ease a new semester

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”

The Harry Potter book and film series have done the unthinkable by not only making reading fashionable, but school as well. Featuring “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,” aka the neatest place ever conceived by human (or wizard), its characters play out their roles while living in a magical castle which serves as both their school and home. Essentially, the ultimate adventurer’s playground, any student in the real world can indulge in thoughts of sneaking out of class and discovering hidden chambers with hundreds of years of magical history.

“Twilight: New Moon”

Arguably the best of the three “Twilight” films to date, “New Moon” continues the tale of Bella Swan’s and Edward Cullen’s love story, which is interrupted by Jacob Black, who complicates tings and raises tension between the two supernatural studs. Nearly all characters involved are students in the small town’s only high school, which sits chilly and damp in gloomy Washington state.

“Dazed and Confused”

A coming-of-age classic, this movie follows a slew of future big name actors (Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey) portraying high school and college-aged miscreants falling into social cliques and wreaking mischief on a tight-knit 1970s town over the course of a few days. Hazing, harassing, courting and other hilariously exaggerated blunders of youth make this film easy to enjoy and re-enjoy while thanking your lucky stars that such troubles don’t inflict your own life so treacherously.

“Scream”

The original ’90s slasher flick takes small-town teens and thrusts them into a murder mystery where no one is safe and everyone is a suspect. Although it’s not a conventional school-themed flick, the film’s characters spend a lot of their time speculating about the mysterious killings of their peers at an overly-glamorized high school. Bonus points for taking place in fall and featuring faux foliage to get viewers excited for Halloween festivities.

“Legally Blonde”

It’s hard to believe that this movie was released more than 10 years ago as it is still as unrealistic and enjoyable as ever. In it, a not-so-dumb blonde Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) heads to Harvard Law School to prove to herself, her snobby ex-boyfriend and all of her peers that her determination and surprising intellectual abilities can carry her to greatness. Through Elle’s perfectly-pink ensembles and chipper demeanor, this film makes higher education seem downright fun. Viewers can feel the urge to crack open the books and study up for some higher purpose.
