As the Cal State Long Beach semester begins, another entertaining season follows at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Items on this season’s agenda include musical productions, unique visual performances and more.
The new season begins in September and goes throughout year with the never-ending desire to reflect the diversity in the Long Beach community. The season is categorized into several series: Cabaret; Wit and Wisdom; Music and Stage; Dance; Sunday Concerts and Spectacle events.
Cabaret
Acclaimed Broadway star Davis Gaines will kick off the season on Sept. 21-22 at 7 p.m. with a warm and romanticized evening. Gaines is best known for his role in “Phantom of the Opera” in Los Angeles as the longest-running Phantom.
“Audience members can expect [a cabaret setting] that will personally display the versatility in his voice that ranges from baritone to tenor,” said Michael Field, director of marketing for the Carpenter Center.
Wit and Wisdom
The witty and wise award-winning actress Shirley MacLaine graces the stage in an intimate conversation for one evening to share her life.
“People love her for her frankness,” Field said. “She is known for telling it how it is.”
On Sept. 24 at 8 p.m., “An Evening with Shirley MacLaine” will include personal photographs and video clips with her own private disclosures.
Music and Stage Events
“Sweet Honey in the Rock” is an a cappella, all female group that captures the message against oppression and censorship. On Oct. 1 at 8 p.m., audience members can expect a mixture of sounds like Blues, reggae, jazz and African chant.
This event is a part of the B-Word Project, a prestigious grant that’s given out to select schools and coordinated out of the Carpenter Center. It aims to stimulate discussion like censorship through artists and departments.
Other musical and lively events are the returning Zoppe Italian Family Circus from Oct. 6-9 and the Metales M5 Brass Spectacular on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
Clowns, acrobats and audience participation are abundant in the family-friendly Zoppe Italian Family Circus.
Dance
The dance series will be a unique combination of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and a score by Radiohead. “Ballet Maribor Radio and Juliet” will premiere on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.
“Not a lot of artist’s music transitions so well, or has the ability underscore like [Radiohead] does,” Field said.
Sunday Concerts
The Carpenter Center has recently taken over the Long Beach Community Concert Association, along with the responsibility of running a variety of performances as a part of a comedic Sunday series.
As a part of that custom, Igudesman and Joo will take stage on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. The duo will display a comic relief that includes camp and slapstick paired with classically-trained violinist and pianist.
Linda Tilllery and the Cultural Heritage Choir will perform on Nov. 27 at 2 p.m., exhibiting a deeply-rooted musical production that reflects the Deep South.
Spectacle
Dance illusionist “Momix: Botanica” is a visually-impressive show that entertains an audience of all ages.
“Botanica is their latest performance creation that will allow audience members to witness the performers to become plants that grow, blossom and bloom,” Field said. “[Momix: Botanica] will take you through the world around us. A garden of imagery that will be more fun in wondering how it was created.”
