Wild Wednesday provides ‘a good laugh,’ ‘good time’

With more outrageous costumes than Lady Gaga helping tuck in a cup size respectably bigger than Dolly Parton’s, four larger-than-life performers took the stage at Hamburger Mary’s Wednesday night, entertaining and strutting their stuff during the Wild Wednesday Drag Show.

The DJ sounded a drum roll at 10:15 p.m. in preparation of what was about to take place on stage. As the streak of the lights flashed an assortment of ostentatious colors centered on the dance floor, the host, Miss Jules, took the stage and started the night with a bash of sexually-geared jokes towards an overly exasperated crowd. The crowd waited for the show to begin, and was more than ready to take whatever crap Miss Jules had coming to them.

“We’re gonna give you a show,” Jules said in an attempt to calm the nerves of the anxious crowd. “So you better wake the fuck up.”

With a variety of music ranging from Gretchen Wilson, Rihanna, and Florence and the Machine, the four performers took the stage in six musical renditions. They lip synced to their own choreographed routines and ignited the crowd in a hyperactive frenzy. Accompanied with dramatic ensembles — blending a mixture of teased extensions and fish net stockings, combined with the right amount of glitter reflecting against the flash of the strobe lights — it was clear no performer was a rookie. And the crowd, standing toe-to-toe, swigging elite cocktails, were more than pleased with their main ladies.

“I really enjoy it,” said frequent patron Cassie Denney. “I’m always inviting people. If you need to get a good laugh, this place is always a good time.”

The performances are both outlandish and entertaining, blending just enough talent with humor. The third performer of the night sang her own rendition of Smash Mouth’s, “I’m a believer,” transforming the lyrics into such sexually explicit words as, “And I wouldn’t eat her.” She finished the song with a comment professing that, “I have a problem with things that bleed seven days without dying.” The crowd roared, raising their cocktails mighty and proud.

The next drag queen took the stage with a bottle of chocolate syrup, running from one audience member to the next pouring the brown aphrodisiac down their throats and hers, acting as one of the bigger crowd pleasers of the night.

The last performer of the evening, Twiggy D Warhol, said her favorite part of performing Wednesday nights at Hamburger Mary’s is art.

“I love getting ready and getting dressed up,” she said. “I used to dance in front of my mom’s mirror when I was three. I just love the idea of performing.”

Performing seems to be the main trend for each of these entertainers and is a hobby they hold very dear to their hearts. Sahshey Couture, a regular entertainer at Wild Wednesdays who decided to sit this evening out, said that when she’s not raising money for local charities, she’s strutting her stuff on the stage hoping to please a crowd.

“I enjoy portraying a woman,” Couture said. “It’s a craft-like allusion or a fantasy. I’m an entertainer. It’s what I do.”

Despite the diversity of the performers and the places they derive from, all seem to share one common goal, and that is their love for entertaining others.

“Everyone comes from different backgrounds and places,” Warhol said. “But we all unite in the idea of performing and pleasing a crowd. If the audience isn’t having a good time, then we’re not doing our jobs.”

Wild Wednesdays takes place every Wednesday from 10 – 11 p.m. with a $5 cover charge. Hamburger Mary’s is located at 740 E. Broadway.
