The Kids go mainstream in “Mine Is Yours”

“Mine Is Yours” is a really good but it’s also too neat and, well, kind of boring.

“Mine Is Yours” is the third studio album by Long Beach based band Cold War Kids, who first broke into the indie scene with their gritty debut “Robbers & Cowards.” It also marks the first time Cold War Kids work with Kings of Leon producer, Jacquire King.

Let’s start at the beginning, when Cold War Kids gave us “Robbers & Cowards,” it was loud, groundbreaking and their detailed lyrics where poetry much like Kings of Leon’s first few records — before they styled their hair. In “Mine If Yours”, they have taken a sharp turn and only time will tell if it’s in the right direction.

The title track starts slow and neatly paced. It later evolves into a hymn-like song about love. Although the message is beautiful, it’s Nathan Willet’s “whoa-oh’s” that sends the message that this once-indie band is going mainstream.

Tracks like “Louder Than Ever,” “Skip the Charades,” and “Bulldozer” is the few that channel albums and songs past. “Louder Than Ever” is as good digitally as it is live and vice-versa. It has a catchy and uplifting chorus.

Aside from the tracks mentioned above, “Mine Is Yours” is something else. Cold War Kids no longer rant about suicide, religion and beautiful nonsense. This time around Cold War Kids sing about broken relationships, which may seem like a more personal topic, but it doesn’t feel that way.

Cold War Kids have created with “Mine Is Yours” a hybrid of different genres. Perhaps the Kids are growing up. For now, all we can hope is that at the end of their live set Cold War Kids play an out-of-control version of “Saint John.”
