The combination of copasetic tunes and goodhearted donations for a helpful cause was the attraction to Thursday night’s benefit show at the Gaslamp featuring Tangent.
The band collaborated with sorority Delta Zeta to raise money for the House Year Institute, a group that benefits the deaf.
Cal State Long Beach senior Christopher Elce, an economics major and Tangent lead guitarist said, “We’re essentially rocking out for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy it.”
Tangent’s 45-minute set consisted of hard rock songs from the such as some of the fan favorites “Witching Spell” and “What’s Mine Ain’t Mine” to “Tirelessly,” a much slower track that comes with a sentimental groovy reggae feel to soften the mood.
The small crowd ― now fully awakened by the waves of guitar solos and pints of alcohol ― gazed as the musicians moved around on stage while they ran their fingers up and down the fret board. The music was rather intriguing with the hardness of double pedal action from the drums to the solos from the Elce’s guitar. Elce uses a combination of effects pedals to bring the electric sound during his solos and chorus that compliment the transition from rough to soft verses of the vocals.
Tangent has previously partnered up with other CSULB organizations, such as Headstrong, where they’ve performed at Gaslamp to help a cause. Elce says it’s beneficial for both the organization and his band.
Elce, who is also Tangent’s manager, noted that they’re expecting a 14-song full-length LP to be recorded in January. The true independent band already has an EP, which is featured and can be purchased on iTunes.
