Get ‘Tangled’ in Disney’s latest charming release

“Tangled” is Disney’s 50th animated release, and it reassures that Disney has not lost any of their magical charm, despite Pixar’s noninvolvement with the film.

The film is a modern version of the old fairytale “Rapunzel,” complete with stunningly gorgeous computer-generated technology and the optional 3-D.

Those familiar with the tale of “Rapunzel” will already know that there may not be much to work with for a full-length film. That’s why there are plenty of changes that make the story more unique and actually work as the 90-minute film that it is.

The story starts off by revealing a golden flower that contains healing properties and the ability to reverse aging. Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) finds it and wants to use it for herself, so she hides it from everyone. By a careless mistake of hers, the flower is revealed and becomes infused with the hair of a baby Rapunzel (Mandy Moore).

Gothel wants to use the power of her hair for herself and kidnaps Rapunzel, locking her away in a tower, where the glorious golden locks grow to 70 feet. By a twist of fate, Rapunzel finds Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) and she begins an adventure of a lifetime.

Animation in “Tangled” is among some of Disney’s best. The entire film was filled with luscious, vivid colors that really popped off the screen. Scenery looked very realistic, lush, and the movement of characters was smooth and melded together in a perfect way. Even if not seen in 3-D, Rapunzel’s world is magical enough to fully draw you in with charm.

One will get hypnotized at the acrobatics of Rapunzel’s lush locks twirling around like a ribbon dance. Just think of all the time it took to make some hair look that good.

Disney got the magic right in this storyline, which will catch you from the beginning and pull you through until the very end. They made changes to the original fairy tale but did it with that magical charm that is found in all Disney movies.

The right amount of comedy and seriousness blends together to form this great recipe for a story. Those that watch this film will find themselves laughing plenty of times through the movie, but also experience moments that can drive them close to tears.

As you watch them, you’ll grow attached to Rapunzel and Flynn, who both develop and mature on their journey together. The audience will grow to love these two, and share a deep hatred for the selfish Mother Gothel.

The rest of the cast is quirky and lovable as well. From the group of mean-looking “ruffians” who each have their own dream, or Rapunzel’s pet chameleon Pascal, or even the intelligent and noble horse, Maximus, you’re sure to find a character that you’ll like.

Along with the great storyline and lush picture is a great musical score by Alan Menken. Each track feels magical, which makes it a perfect fit for Rapunzel and friends. The score blends so well together with the rest of the movie that it will just feel natural.

Of course, being a Disney film, this story will have a happy ending. In a way, the “miracle” moment was a bit predictable, but it was still very emotional and touching. Those that have grown up on Disney films won’t be surprised, but will enjoy it nonetheless.

“Tangled” is a pure joy to watch, and the perfect movie for both kids and adults this holiday season. Rapunzel is just as charming and beautiful as the other Disney princesses, and surely has earned her spot with the rest.
