At the age of 10, Justin Foutz picked up a guitar, began experimenting with some of his favorite songs and never looked back. Now the 26-year-old musician has gained a slew of fans, as well as a noticeable buzz in Nashville, proving that the flame of this rising star has little chance of burning out soon.
Foutz’s second untitled album previews 11 songs that in simple lyricism and good old country fashion, reveal the love, loss, truth, and chaos of daily life. The CD, which hit stores in October, has acquired so much attention that it managed to win Foutz the 2010 Los Angeles Music Award for best country artist of the year.
Aside from his growing popularity, Foutz’s second album doesn’t seem to stand a chance against other more popular contemporary Country heavyweights. With songs like “Dancing With the Devil” and “Are You Crying Yet,” which convey the struggles of daily life, they play out like a melodramatic sob story that audiences have heard too many times before.
Although each song begins with an interesting, upbeat sound, mixing country acoustics with a good blend of rock and roll, the simplicity behind the lyrics themselves is what makes the album fall short within the realm of more recognizable Country musicians.
While some songs speak of love, and others convey the chaos of a night out on the town, despite different themes, each song fails to stand out in a unique way.
With the help of edgy guitar solos keeping the CD afloat, the common clichés revealed within songs like, “She Got the Gitti Up” and “Stay Home Tonight,” sound more like a reproduction of a bad romance novel, rather than the threads of a future country sensation.
But with a LA music award under his belt, along with his growing popularity, Foutz may have the talent to push his way up to the top and make a name for himself in Nashville. Let’s just hope he can figure out a more interesting approach to relating to his audience through his music; one that doesn’t only relate to typical country crooners down south, but to people everywhere.
Foutz will perform at the EVO Lounge in Long Beach on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. The EVO Lounge is located at 5300 E. 2nd St.
