Ear-piercing screams filled the intimate area of the House of Blues in Anaheim on Saturday as pop-punk boy band The Maine took the stage as part of their Harmony Tour with Never Shout Never.
The handsome Arizona quintet walked onto the pitch-black stage as vocalist John O’Callaghan commanded the attention of dozens of screaming teenage girls who didn’t give their vocal chords a rest throughout The Maine’s entire set.
Surprisingly, the band didn’t treat the crowd with expected hits such as “Girls Do What They Want” and “Everything I Ask For,” but instead with new songs from their July 2010 release, “Black and White.” However, that didn’t stop the crowd from constantly pushing toward the front, leading one obviously irritated teenage fan to eloquently scream, “Back the fuck up!”
Beginning with an untitled intro song, it was clear that the band is entering a mature level of music as they played a more classic rock-sounding song that had been previously unreleased.
The intro led directly into “The Right Girl,” off of “Black and White.” Since the album’s release, it was clear that fans had plenty of time to learn the songs. As O’Callaghan sang that he had to do “the wrong thing to the right girl,” his voice was almost overshadowed by the girly voices that came from the audience as they sang along.
However, O’Callaghan wasn’t the only member of the band who got a lot of attention. Bassist Garret Nicklesen was never still as he continuously ran from one side of the stage to the other.
Since the band is comprised of good-looking young men, girls could be heard screaming, “I love you *insert member’s name here*” at any given moment.
The Maine ended their set with two songs off their first full-length release, “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.”
“Into Your Arms” had the audience swaying as guitarist Kennedy Brock played acoustically and accompanied O’Callaghan’s voice and a keyboard.
“We’ll All Be” was introduced as the final song of the night. O’Callaghan gave a speech with a strong emphasis on individuality before the band played the song. This resonated positive vibes throughout the audience, just in time to set the “peace and love” vibe of Never Shout Never’s songs.
