Chase Long Beach returns home

Just when ska music seemed like a thing of the past, Chase Long Beach reinforced the notion that the collision of punk rock music and brass wind instrumentals is still as cool as ever.

The band headlined at DiPiazza’s on Thursday night.

Chase Long Beach is not a typical, wannabe rockstar garage band. The group’s seven members have played all over the world alongside popular ska bands such as Reel Big Fish, Suburban Legends and The English Beat. They’ve also toured on the Vans Warped Tour, as well as performed at this year’s Bamboozle Left Festival in Anaheim.

The group, who formed their unique ensemble in 2002, are back on their own again, playing at small venues around the Los Angeles area after recently dropping from Victory Records.

The members explained that being separate from their previous label will give them more opportunities to play local shows, allowing them to stay in touch with their roots that run deep in Long Beach.

The group took the stage in front of an audience of more than 100 fans from all over the area.

Joining them that evening was Karen Roberts (vocals), who recently quit the group to pursue an acting career. Roberts was as vivacious as ever. As the band moved slickly from one song to another, Roberts maintained her grace while keeping up with the energy of the crowd as they cheered, sang along and crowd surfed their way through the rest of the band’s performance.

But Roberts wasn’t the only one with a lively spirit. Back-up singer and trumpet player, Tristan Dolce, also hopped around the stage during songs, while Joe Cooper (guitar) and Patrick Clancy (bass) rocked out on stage as Roberts danced between them.

One eager fan spoke about the band’s performance after the show, saying that the group was as fantastic as ever and that a performance in their native town was long overdue.

Clancy explained the band’s appreciation for Long Beach and what it was like to play a hometown show.

“It’s like everywhere we go, no matter where we’re touring or just playing shows in other cities, it’s like we’ll always be ‘Chasing Long Beach.’ It’s our home. It’s where we’ll always be coming back to.”
