A mass of people, young and old, gathered at Club Nokia on Aug. 28 to witness something they had waited four years for — the return of Orange County rockers, Something Corporate.
After going on an indefinite hiatus in 2006 due to creative differences, as reported in an interview with the band in Alternative Press Magazine, the band returned to the scene for a reunion tour.
Instead of having an opening act, Something Corporate was the only band on the bill for the evening. This caused fans to become restless and eager for the band to take the stage.
Finally, the lights dimmed and Peaches and Herb’s “Reunited” began playing on the speakers as four of the five original band members walked onto the stage.
Despite it being the last night of the tour, lead vocalist Andrew McMahon showed no signs of exhaustion.
The band opened with their energetic hit, “I Woke Up in a Car.” McMahon played on his piano keys as audience members pushed through the crowd and nostalgically sang along.
As soon as Something Corporate broke out into their next song entitled “Hurricane,” McMahon was standing and dancing on top of his piano, which is something his fans know him for.
To introduce the song “I Kissed a Drunk Girl,” McMahon told the audience a story of when the band played the song at a high school and were forced to change the lyrics to “I Kissed a Blonde Girl.” Audience members responded by laughing due to the immature nature of the song and how absurd the edited title sounded.
The band treated fans with a performance of “Walking By” from their 2001 EP, “Songs for Silent Movies.” The song was enticing as it became easy for listeners to get lost in the sounds of the piano and McMahon’s melodic voice.
After playing the sing-along and upbeat favorite, “Punk Rock Princess,” the band came back for an encore.
The lights dimmed and McMahon was seen alone on stage playing his piano. Accompanied by beautiful piano riffs and compelling lyrics, the band played their most requested song, “Konstantine,” in its entire nine-minute length. Despite how long the song was, no one showed boredom and all were silent except for some who sang along. The song had a quality that drew people in and even brought some to tears.
To celebrate their last night of tour, the band decided to play three more songs: “Forget December,” “Down” and “If U See Jordan.”
After four years of waiting for the band’s return, fans were definitely not disappointed. McMahon ended the night by saying, “See you later!” which fans could only hope meant that this represented a new beginning for the band and not the end.
