Arianna Huffington to speak on campus

Cal State Long Beach has announced Arianna Huffington as the speaker for the Fourth Annual Distinguished Speaker Series.

“Huffington is a pioneer in new media,” Director of the Distinguished Speaker’s Series Art Levine said.

As the editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, author of 13 books, creator of a nationally syndicated column and co-host of the radio talk show “Left, Right, Center,” she is a nationally recognized voice on politics.

Her online news website is one of the best known in America. During the governor recall election of 2003, she ran against Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She will be lecturing about the Internet’s impact on politics and how it empowers the ordinary citizen.

“The Internet is changing everything. The powers are moving away from traditional media [standards].

Everyone can be a broadcaster,” Levine said. “It’s a democratization of the media.”

The Distinguished Speaker series is an annual event run by the Division of Student Services. According to their website, the mission of the series is to “bring accomplished and distinctive speakers to the CSULB campus, to provide insight into the critical issues of our time.”

She will be promoting her new book “Third World America,” which will be released this September. Copies will be on sale at the event and there will be time for a book signing at the end of the evening.

The event will be held at the Carpenter Center on Oct. 21. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with light refreshments followed by the featured address. There will then be a panel discussion and a book signing.

Tickets can be purchased for $20 with a student ID via distinguishedspeakerseries.com. A sponsor ticket, which includes dinner before the event, is also available for $100. All profits benefit the CSULB general scholarship fund.
