If anyone deserves to play a show on the beach, it’s Long Beach’s Cold War Kids. They might not be your typical band of beach boys who go wilding out onstage with no t-shirts on, but they sure know how to keep a crowd on their toes.
On August 3, Cold War Kids took the stage at the Huntington Beach Pier to kick-off the first day of the U.S. Open of Surfing competition event.
Even though the show was free, there wasn’t a big turnout. Still, there were bleachers to the left and right of the stage for attendees who didn’t want to dip their toes into the hot sand.
Ironically, Cold War Kids started their set with “I’ve Seen Enough,” which is a bluesy number about the end of summer.
They followed with a crowd favorite, “Mexican Dogs.” Down below, the crowd sang along to the chorus, “Like Mexican dogs, nobody gave us names.”
After waiting to hear the band’s most popular song, the audience grew excited as Cold War Kids finally played “Hang Me Up to Dry.” Peace signs were seen up in the air each time Nathan Willett (vocals) sang, “You wrung me out too too many times.”
During one of the breaks, Willett told the audience that the band’s lack of recent shows was due to the production of a new record, which he said would be out in early 2011. The next record will mark the first full-length album by Cold War Kids in three years.
During “We Used to Vacation,” Matt Maust (bass) and Jonnie Russell (guitar) pranced around the stage and bumped into each other while Willet played the keyboard.
“Hospital Beds” kept the audience clapping and singing, while some even headbanged.
Despite the heat and early showtime, Cold War Kids played an amazing show. It wasn’t because it was by the beach, with a crowd of girls wearing bikinis and good-looking boys in beach shorts and tank tops, but because Cold War Kids never disappoint with a live show.
Also playing during the 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing week are Cobra Starship and Weezer. Check out the music schedule at usopenofsurfing.com.
