This is the time of year when most students start to feel the excitement and anticipation of the approaching summer season — while at the same time feeling the stress of the end of the semester and dreaded finals week. For those who fall into this category and are looking for a fun and cathartic activity for the weekend, the city of Long Beach is hosting its monthly Art Walk this Saturday night.
The Art Walk will feature local artists and musicians, with interactive arts and crafts, food, drinks, music and more. It’s a great opportunity to passively take in the talents of the local artists or create whole new works.
The streets are closed to traffic while local art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants keep their shops open late for the event. Instead of car horns and congested traffic, the streets in Downtown Long Beach is lined with color and loud music.
The art event gives the community a chance to interact with the artist and make personal connections to their works, which allows for a more personal experience than walking through art galleries.
There may even be a “Long Beach Masterpiece” for only $1. For the first time, there will be a contest for artists and a raffle for visitors. Tickets for the raffle will be available at the registration table and there is no limit to the number of $1 tickets guests can purchase. The best artist will be awarded a $75 prize at the end of the contest.
Marek Dzida, the Art Walk’s event manager and public relations representative, said that artists come from all over Southern California to participate in the event.
“We encourage anyone who wants to take part in the Art Walk to join in,” Dzida said.
Any working artists in the area who would like to participate in the event should contact the Art Walk. They encourage everyone to reserve a spot — from long time artists or art organizations to beginners. Each space is 10 feet by 10 feet and can be reserved for a $30 donation in advance or on the day of the event.
The city of Long Beach hosts the Art Walk every second Saturday of the month in the East Village Arts District around the streets of Ocean Boulevard, Linden Avenue, First Street, Broadway and Elm Street. Admission to the event is free and takes place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
