Greek Week raises money for charity

Classic Dr. Seuss stories will be given a college-life twist during the Greek Sing at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Walter Pyramid.

The Greek Sing is the kick-off event for Cal State Long Beach’s Greek Week. The week will include a series of events aimed to raise money for One Heartland, “a nonprofit organization committed to greatly improving the lives of children, youth and their families impacted by HIV/AIDS and other significant life challenges worldwide,” according to its Web site.

Each team participating in Greek Sing will prepare an 8-12 minute choreographed dance routine to the theme of a Dr. Seuss book, according to Greek Week Coordinator Jerry Rodriguez.

Greek Week will start with a presentation by Marcus Engel, an author and public speaker who was blinded and catastrophically injured by a drunk driver, next Monday.

A “Jail Out, Bail Out” event will take place on Tuesday. Faculty and staff will be “jailed” until donation goals are met.

Wednesday will feature the “Take Over the Marketplace” event, where several restaurants and shops in the Long Beach Marketplace on Pacific Coast Highway and 2nd Street will donate to One Heartland.

A can castle competition on Thursday will collect canned food to donate to the Long Beach Rescue Mission.

Greek Week will wind down next Friday with relay games on the rugby field. These relays are in preparation for Relay for Life.

Tickets for Greek Sing are on sale now for $5 and will be sold at the door for $10.
