EDITOR’S NOTE: Each week The Volante sports staff will interview a member of the USD athletic community and ask them off-the-wall questions. Enjoy the hilarity.
Jake Thomas is a freshman at USD. He is a starter for the men’s basketball team and has already had a tremendous start to his young career and in Saturday’s game against North Dakota posted 12/12 from the free point line and scored 27 points.
Erica Robish: What’s your major?
Jake Thomas: I have absolutely no idea yet. I want to do something with sports. I think I want to coach but you can’t major in that.
ER: What is your favorite food?
JT: Ice cream.
ER; Any certain flavor?
JT: Cookie dough.
ER: What is one surprise you’ve come across being a freshman at USD?
JT: How much stuff we have to do because the upperclassmen pull the ‘freshman card’. It’s not all that bad, but we have to do a lot of little things because of it.
ER: Do you have any siblings?
JT: Yeah, I have a younger brother
ER: Do you ever teach him any of your skills?
JT: I try to but he’s more of outdoorsy person, like more into hunting and activities like that.
ER: So you’re from Wisconsin, does that make you a Brett Favre
lover or hater?
JT: Love that guy. I was very disappointed in the NFC championship game.
ER: But you couldn’t possibly be cheering for the Vikings could you?
JT: I’m a packer fan, but I was cheering for the Vikings just because of Favre.
ER: What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on a basketball court?
JT: In high school I completely missed a fast break dunk. I almost fell over, I felt really stupid.
ER: Who’s your favorite player to watch in the NBA?
JT: Lebron James
ER: Any particular reason why?
JT: I don’t know probably just because something different happens every time he’s out on the court I just love that.
ER: So you’ve got quite the jump shot? Who if anyone, do you credit
that to?
JT: Oh there are many, but my dad is always pointing things out to me after my games.
ER: So did your dad play basketball too?
JT: Actually neither of my parents played basketball, that’s kind of weird.
ER: Your roommate Conrad Krutwig is also a freshman on the team. Who would win a one-on-one contest?
JT: Conrad would kill me.
ER: Why is that?
JT: He just reminds me a lot of Kobe; he’s got the total package.
ER: What’s the most fun road trip you’ve been on for basketball?
JT: This last one we just had up to UND. That was definitely fun, the fans were crazy and they were talking to me the whole game. We were talking back and forth; it was fun.
ER: What kind of words did you exchange?
JT: One guy just continued to tell me how bad I was. So every time I hit a shot I would look at him and everyone around him would laugh. At half time he came up to me and bet me ten dollars I wouldn’t score 10 points in the second half, but I did so that was pretty funny.
ER: So did you collect your winnings?
JT: No I didn’t, I figured I’d get it next year.
