Women close to conference title

The women’s basketball team is rebuilding its winning streak after gaining another win on Thursday.’

The Screaming Eagles (15-3, 6-1 GLVC) outscored the Kentucky Wesleyan University Panthers (8-7, 1-5 GLVC) by a score of 79-61. ‘

An early two point jump shot by Amie Newhart gave the Screaming Eagles the lead, which it maintained the entire game.’ The Screaming Eagles led by 23 points with just over one minute remaining in the game.’ Despite attempts by the Panthers, it could not overcome the Screaming Eagles’ lead.’

Newhart led overall in scoring with 19 points.’ Ellen Young followed with 18 points and Anaris Sickles added 14 points.

Aside from having the game lead and eventual win, the team also shot a 90.9 percent overall from the free-throw line.’

The team’s next two games, scheduled for Saturday against Quincy University and on Monday at No. 17 Drury University, were postponed following the death of men’s basketball player Jeron Lewis.’

The women will return to action today at the University of Indianapolis.’ The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. (CST).’

The No. 3 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds has a record of 17-0, 8-0 GLVC.’ It is also ranked No. 1 in the East Division, closely followed by the Screaming Eagles.’

Both teams will have to be on their A game as both are sure to put up a fight for the win.’

Neither team has played the other yet this season, however, a comparison of statistics from the Greyhounds most recent win against the University of Missouri Science & Technology Miners shows some strengths and weaknesses both teams will be dealing with.’

In the Screaming Eagles game with the Miners, the Screaming Eagles were defeated on Jan. 7 by a score of 51-73.’

Despite the Screaming Eagles losing 51-73, it shot 87.5 percent overall from the free-throw line, compared to the Greyhounds 71.4 percent.’

The women slightly struggled at the three-point line shooting 14.3 percent compared to the Greyhounds 44.4 percent.’ The Screaming Eagles shot 26.9 percent from the field compared to 56.9 percent by the Greyhounds.’

Both teams secured high rebound numbers during the games with the Greyhound leading with 30 to the Screaming Eagles’ 24.

The Greyhounds finished with 12 turnovers compared to the Screaming Eagles’ 15. ‘
