Outdoor series to start today

Determined to rid homework and the stress of school from my head, last weekend I loaded up my mountain bike and headed south to ride one of my favorite winter trails. The sun was out and the weather was cool but still enjoyable.

As I gripped the handles my adrenaline rose and I bolted down the slick rock terrain. Traveling along the rough course the only concern in my mind was conquering the trail without making a blood sacrifice, and more importantly, avoiding injury to my ever faithful mountain bike.

If biking isn’t on your favorite list of outdoor activities, the upcoming Outdoor Education Series (OES) may have something that will spark your interest. The series will offer a wide range of classes such as treasures from geocaching, archaeology, survival school and even outdoor cooking.

Anne Smith, Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative Campus Coordinator says, ‘There are so many outdoor activities near SUU,’ and said she feels the series chosen for this spring’s session are only a tip of the iceberg of activities available in the area.

The series will begin today at 11:30 a.m. in the Outdoor Center, and will run consecutively for 14 weeks. Each session is an hour long, free of charge and open to the public. The speakers chosen for each week are from a wide range of specialties and backgrounds which will enhance each specific class.

Provost Brad Cook will kick off the series with ‘The Outdoor Vision of SUU’ and will set the venue of the series events.

Outdoor activities play an important role in the success of students here at SUU.

‘All work and no play is boring,’ Cameron Jones, a senior physical education major from Brigham City, said. ‘There needs to be a balance between the two in order to be successful.’

He also uses the Outdoor Center frequently, and likes the fact he can rent equipment at a very low cost, which makes it possible for him to participate in the outdoor activities.

Jones also commented, ‘Sure, you may do well in school without enjoying the outdoors, but what fun would that be?’Jones said.

Don’t let the grey skies and cold temperatures fool you. There are plenty of exciting and fun things to do here in Cedar City and the surrounding area throughout the year.

The Outdoor Education Series is geared to motivate and enhance your learning experience here at school. Gather your friends and attend these fun and informative classes. Take advantage of what southern Utah outdoors has to offer while you are attending SUU.
