Professional development, athletics seek funds

Athletic pursuits and professional development opportunities dominated Wednesday’s SUUSA Clubs and Student Involvement Assembly meeting, where six bills were presented totaling approximately $2,800.

Two athletic teams and a pair of professional organizations vied for the majority of the funds, each citing passion, necessary experience, and priceless benefits for SUU as support for their cases.

Athletics and Recreation Delegate Preston Leavitt sponsored Bills 021-10 ‘Waulk Hard’ and 022-10 ‘What Happens in Vegas’hellip;’ because he wanted to convey their passion to the assembly.

The Rugby Club asked for $232.50 in Bill 022-10 ‘What Happens in Vegas,’ to attend the Las Vegas Invitational in mid-February.

According to the bill, the team would be ‘competing against some of the biggest names in collegiate rugby.’ Leavitt expressed his belief that the team has great leaders and will do well at the tournament.

Also looking to compete in mid-February, the Waukeenyan’s sought $1,058 in Bill 021-10 ‘Waulk Hard’ to attend the United Spirit Association Nationals Competition in California Feb. 12 to 15.

Waukeenyan President Amanda Meacham, a junior exercise science major from Salt Lake City, said the competition would be an opportunity for the team to showcase their talents and represent SUU.

The funds requested would go toward travel, hotel, choreography, and entry fees, according to the bill.

Delegate Leavitt said the team has been putting in a lot of practice time and deserves the chance to compete for the time they put in supporting SUU events.

Professional Development Delegate Colby Presley sponsored three of the six bills presented at the meeting.

Two of them, 023-10 ‘Ye That Serve Shall be Rewarded’ and 024-10 ‘VITA-veta-vegamin,’ proposed by the Professional Accountancy Club, requested funds to support the club in their charitable efforts on campus and reward them for their hard work.

The PAC asked for $211.38 in ‘VITA-veta-vegamin’ to purchase supplies for their annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which runs from Jan. 25 to April 15 and provides free income tax services to students.

Athletics and Recreation Delegate Tyrel Wilcox said the program helped more than 700 people last year and that it is important for the students involved to gain experience in their field.

The club also asked for $299 to go toward their reward dinner on April 15, which is given to ‘show gratitude to the volunteers,’ according to the bill.

Presley also sponsored Bill 025-10 ‘Southern California Farming,’ proposed by the Agriculture Club, asked for $1,171.20 to attend the World Ag Expo in California in February.

Club Adviser Dean Winward told the assembly it would ‘expose students to agriculture in different parts of the United States.’

Presley said he sponsored the bills because he feels it is important for students in professional clubs to get hands-on experience in their area of work. These opportunities make them ‘more marketable for their career’ and help them to gain additional knowledge, he said.

The Rock & Roll Forever Club proposed Bill 020-10 ‘Battle for the Best’ to seek a $40 allocation toward the upcoming Battle of the Bands competition on Jan. 30.

All six bills were postponed one week for further investigation.
